Striking the right balance between your professional and personal life can feel like walking a tightrope, especially in property management. But I’m here to tell you it’s possible. Not jus possible; it's essential for lasting success and personal fulfillment. It’s also essential, if you want to avoid burnout. Whether you’re an agency principal, a property management leader, or you’re brand new to property management and you want a successful career, work-life balance isn’t just a buzzword. It’s going to become a key part of your journey.
Having spent 16 years in property management, and making many mistakes in relation to work-life balance, I want to share the things that have helped me create the perfect balance. After 14 years of marriage and raising two wonderful sons while growing my rent roll, I've learned the art of balancing work and life. And I want to share my tips with you.
Being Fully Present: The Key to Balance
The secret lies in being wholly present wherever you are. When at work, give it your all. Property management is not just about managing properties; it's about managing relationships, expectations, and, most importantly, managing yourself. By being fully present at work, you increase your productivity and decision-making abilities, ensuring that your time in the office is as effective as possible.
Yet, the other side of the coin is just as crucial: switching off. When you’re home, be all in with your family. It’s about making every moment with your loved ones count. This separation is vital not just for your personal life but also for maintaining enthusiasm and energy for your work and business.
Work Hard, Play Harder
Embracing a ‘work hard, play hard’ mentality can make a significant difference. It's about understanding that hard work deserves equal, if not more, playtime. This approach doesn’t mean neglecting responsibilities. It’s about rewarding your hard work with meaningful leisure and family time. It's a cycle that fuels itself. The more quality time you spend outside work, the more refreshed and ready you are to tackle challenges in your professional life.
Impact on Productivity and Personal Life
This focused approach brings a remarkable increase in productivity. When you know there’s a time to work and a time to unwind, you naturally become more efficient, making the most of your working hours. Furthermore, this balance positively impacts your personal life. My journey of raising a family alongside a growing and profitable rent roll stands as a testament to the fact that you can have it all. But only if you balance it right.
A Personal Journey of Growth
In my career, finding this balance has been a journey of growth. I’ve seen the benefits firsthand, not just in my professional achievements but in the strong bonds I share with my husband and sons, who are the reason I am in business. This journey has taught me that work-life balance isn't just a trendy phrase – it’s a vital component of a fulfilling life.
Remember this: property management is a demanding industry, but it should also be a rewarding one. It's about making your career work for you, fitting into the lifestyle you desire. Whether you're building a career or growing a rent roll business, the principles of balance remain the same.
Finding a work-life balance in your property management career isn't just about dividing time; it's about enriching both aspects of your life. With focus, dedication, and the right mindset, this balance can lead to remarkable achievements and personal satisfaction.
